Environmental monitoring: fluoroedenite fibres dispersal in air in the volcanic area of Biancavilla (Mt.Etna, Itlay)

We present an important data and results in correlation with environmental and health problems in the area between Paternò and Adrano (small villages sited on south-weastern part of Mount Etna, Italy). In this area the railway line, a fundamental infrastructure, is going to be completed soon, allowing to finish all the “ring structure” of the “circumetnea” railway line.
In some cropping rocks in the Biancavilla area the presence of a new mineral (fluoroedenite), respect with the usual mineralogy of etnean rocks was observed, belonging to the amphibolic groups.
The aim of this work is to show the validity of periodical monitoring, analysing the air quality in time, in agreement with decreasing of this mineral present, limiting the environmental impact.
Analytical methods about sampling and analysing of these fibres dispersal in air, used during these works, are reported here. These analytical methods have been realized by the SIDERCEM s.r.l., laboratory responsible about the environmental monitoring, in collaboration with ISPESL from Rome, responsible about the control of some analyses realized by the SIDERCEM.
Furthermore, we show the principle analytical results of the whole survey, the description of the factors that have influenced the environmental pollution in time and how to reduce them.
